Jess: I just wanted to put some notes in the margins for you.
Rory: What? You’ve read this before.
Jess: About forty times.
Rory: I thought you said you didn’t read much.
Jess: Well, what is much? Goodnight Rory.
Rory: Goodnight Dodger.
Jess: Dodger?
Rory: Figure it out.

LORELAI: Thank you.
LUKE: Oh, it’s…no big deal.
LORELAI: Luke.
LUKE: I just… like to see you happy.

RORY; You care nothing about Luke and his feelings!
JESS; Got a second wind, huh?
RORY; All he does is stick up for you and all you do is make his life harder. I guess that’s what you have to do when you’re trying to be Holden Caulfield but I think it stinks. Luke has done a lot for my mom and a lot for me, and I don’t like to see him attacked. Okay, second wind over.
JESS; I didn’t know they were coming down so hard on him.
RORY; Funny, I never pegged you as clueless, my mistake.
JESS; Okay. I get it. No, no, I do, I get it. So did you at least think it was funny? [she smiles]
RORY; That is so not the point.
JESS; Ah, you thought it was funny.Gilmore Girls, 2x08 The Ins and Outs of Inns
Rory/Jess
for DaisysusanThese days a good percentage of why I ship them is probably because I shipped them in a powerful, life-eating way when I was fourteen and that can be hard to shake.
But I also ship them because I like who they are when they’re together. I like Jess with the walls down a little, I like Jess with aspiration and I like Jess with a smirky-smile on his face. And I like Rory with someone who challenges her and encourages her and calls her out on it when she’s not acting like herself. I like that they had a little drama, that sometimes they had big drama, but that they liked each other enough to let eskimo kisses take care of the small stuff. And I like that they weren’t perfect, that Jess was too screwed up to really make things work, and that Rory had, at that time at least, stuffed herself so full of common sense that she often wouldn’t accept his nonsense. And I like that they were opposites who liked the same things.
I ship them because Milo and Alexis has chemistry in ways that Jared and Alexis and Matt and Alexis did not. Chalk that up to the fact that they were dating in real life, fine, but it still counts for something.
And I ship them because I can see them sorting it all out down the line. They’re tied together by their families and by Stars Hollow, however loosely. “The Real Paul Anka” was not the end of their story. And I can see where it all comes together down the road. I have more personal canon for that than I do for anything else. They make sense.
I started shipping them around “There’s the Rub.” That was about the time spoilers were coming out for “I Can’t Get Started,” and I was a spoiler junkie in those days (now I try not to touch them). It leaked that there was going to be a Rory/Jess kiss and I freaked out and danced around my house with joy (I was fourteen). I hadn’t even realized I cared about them that much, I had always been pretty invested in Rory/Dean (so young, so naive), but by season 3 every ounce of my fandom-focus had shifted to the narrow point of Rory/Jess. And I never really let go of that. They’re still my forever ship.
I have so many favorite scenes that picking just one seems more than a little impossible. I love them on the bridge in “A Tisket, A Tasket.” I love the way they play off of each other in “Dead Uncles and Vegetables.” I love her “I could have loved you” in “Those Are Strings, Pinnochio,” and his “I love you” in “Nag Hammadi is Where they Found the Gnostic Gospels.” I love him calling her out in “Let Me Hear Your Balalaikas Ringing Out.” I love the withering stare scene in “Lorelai’s Graduation Day,” as well as “You never said goodbye.” I still love that kiss in “I Can’t Get Started,” and the kiss in “Let the Games Begin,” (really every time they’re on screen together in “Let the Games Begin”). I love “That’ll Do Pig.” I love the good and the bad in “Swan Song.” I love the early days stuff: the first time they meet, the end of “Presenting Lorelai Gilmore,” and the entirety of “The Ins and Outs of Inns.” If they’re on screen together, I pretty much love it.
As for favorite quote?
- “Ernest only has lovely things to say about you.”
- “Do you yahoo?”/ “You looked it up?”
- “I think I could have loved you.”
- “Dodger?”/ “Figure it out.”
- “You wrote a book?”
- “I know you better than anyone. This isn’t you.”
- “Can you imagine if braces were involved in this interaction?”/ “It’d be a bloodbath.”
- “So, Courtney, what about you?”
- “I couldn’t have done it without you.”
- “It is what it is, you…me.”
- “As you wish.”
- “I thought you said you didn’t read much.”/ “What is much?”
OMG YES YES TO EVERYTHING!
